Frequently Asked Question for Egg Donors at NVFI

Will donating affect my fertility health?

You are born with your lifetime supply of eggs – around 1-2 million! About 15-20 eggs mature inside your ovaries during each menstrual cycle. However, only one follicle typically reaches maturity and releases an egg for ovulation. The rest are discarded by your body.

In short, there is no research supporting any adverse effect of egg donation on your fertility health.

Does the egg retrieval process hurt?

Every patient experiences the egg retrieval process differently. For this procedure, you will be under general anesthesia while your eggs are retrieved by a physician, and may experience some discomfort afterwards. Most individuals are able to return to work the next day, while others may need additional time to recover.

How much are egg donors compensated?

Egg donors earn $5,500.00 for their first donation and $6,500.00 for subsequent donations.

How many times can I donate my eggs?

You are eligible to donate up to six times in a lifetime, as long as you have been approved by our embryologist to return for additional donation cycles.

Is there a height/weight criteria?

Yes. The medications that are administered work best for individuals within a certain weight range.

How much time is involved in the donation process?

The egg donation process has a few steps:

  1. Apply to become an egg donor by filling out our online application below.
  2. Answer any follow-up questions our team has about your medical history as well as your family’s medical history.
  3. Visit our office for fertility health testing and complete your genetic testing and psych interview at home. You can receive the results to all your tests upon request, and all the tests are free.
  4. Once you match with a recipient or are chosen to be in our frozen egg bank, we’ll provide a detailed protocol with medications to help stimulate your egg production and then you’ll visit our office for your egg retrieval.
